Reaping the bounty.

I’ve been a little lax in posting regularly as we’ve been quite consumed with family and work obligations. Christina and I have been putting up a tremendous bounty from the garden as well.

We’ve experienced a strange growing season, with veggies and fruit production being strong for most of our garden plants. We’ve had some difficulties with tomato production this year, and I have a few theories as to why.

We broke new ground this year for the tomatoes and peppers, and haven’t applied our soil building compost and humus to the extent of our older beds. I know it will make a different in a couple more years.

Our very hot June stunted blossom and pollination for them is another idea I’ve had, and we are only now catching up.

I plan to pull the remainder of the tomatoes tomorrow, and plant cover crops to help build soil quality in that bed. My second newest garden bed got the cover crop treatment a few weeks ago and we have a nice stand of daikon radishes, winter rye and hairy vetch.

Finally, the seasons are really turning in the valley. My attention turns to protein and hunting. My hope is to get out this weekend to chase some birds.

Winter cover crop.
