Protein Season

With the arrival of fall, and specifically September 1, my omnivorous attention shifts from tending the garden to tending to wild game.. My firm belief in building resilient local experiences, supply chains, and community, extends to the pursuit of game. I hunt nearly every game species in the state, with a strong affinity for wingshooting. I’m most proficient in upland game hunting, with a lifelong goal to be more proficient at hunting other game as I am with birds. I find it poetry in motion to hunt along my best friend, Elvis, our 7 year old black lab. He and I have hunted now 8 seasons, and our telepathic connection in the field has become one of my proudest and most profound experiences. It awakens in me a spirit that is 20,000 years old.

Knowing how to stalk, harvest and cook your protein sources is elemental to the human condition. It’s also one of the best means in which to manage our natural resources. Hunters, anglers and trappers contribute more to conservation and preservation efforts than any other group.

Game also taste pretty damn delicious. I’ll share some of my favorite recipes for all sorts of critters this fall; you’ll often see them paired with garden produce, putting a 100% local meal on the table for my family.
